Short Description
STDs remain a significant public health problem in Illinois. In 2017, Illinois ranked 10th for reported primary and secondary syphilis. Cook County has the highest numbers of reported female syphilis cases and reported congenital syphilis cases in Illinois, outside of the City of Chicago. The majority of cases are among men (93%), specifically men who have sex with men (MSM), however trends of female rates continue to increase (30% increase in 2017 from 2013). As more females are being diagnosed with syphilis, the trends for congenital syphilis cases also continue to be high. In Illinois (excluding city of Chicago), congenital syphilis cases are primarily found in Cook County. Cook County is the only county that has more than 1 congenital syphilis cases reported each year (2013-2017) with the exception of 2015 where Kane County had also two cases reported. Suburban Cook County on average consist of 62% of all Illinois (excluding Chicago) reported congenital syphilis cases reported each year. The services provided by this grant opportunity are essential to help prevent further transmission of syphilis and the resulting costly medical complications such as pelvic inflammatory disease, ectopic pregnancy, infertility and neonatal death and disability.
