Short Description
The program encourages academically-talented students, especially minority students, to pursue teaching careers, especially in teacher-shortage disciplines and hard-to-staff schools, and provides those students with crucial mentoring, guidance, and in-service support that will significantly increase the likelihood that they will complete their full teaching commitments and elect to continue teaching in targeted disciplines and hard-to-staff schools.

Objective

Range and Average of Financial Assistance
Scholars receive up to $5,000 annually in scholarships applicable towards tuition and fees which converts to a loan should the Scholar not complete agreed-to teaching requirements within a specified period of time. Scholars also receive a stipend for attending an intensive Summer Institute where they are mentored by previously-graduated scholars teaching in Illinois
Program Accomplishments
With a history of the Scholars of Illinois Program that dates back to 1986, Golden Apple has a demonstrated background in preparing excellent teachers to serve in Illinois schools-of-need. To date, Golden Apple has recruited over 3,000 diverse, aspiring teachers into the teaching profession and is actively expanding to deliver an annual impact that systematically improves Illinois schools.
