Objective
While Family Matters’ programs are open to any youth who want to enroll, they tailor the programs for families living in Chicago’s Rogers Park neighborhood and, specifically, the North of Howard area (bounded by Sheridan Road to the east, the Chicago Transit Authority train tracks to the west, Howard Street to the south, and the Chicago city limits to the north). Building Education Equity: Partners in Learning One-to-One Tutor/Mentoring In Partners in Learning, up to 52 individually matched 1st-12th grade youth/adult pairs meet weekly for 90-minute, one-to-one tutor/mentoring sessions. Partners in Learning is the only tuition-free, one-to-one tutor/mentoring program and the only evening tutoring program in the area. Activities, provided through individualized lesson plans, focus on academic support, social-emotional learning, goal setting, and college- and career-readiness. Weekly activities are supplemented with monthly hands-on science and art projects, sharing circles, and twice-yearly “first-time experience” field trips. Volunteer tutor/mentors commit to participating for an entire academic year, with the typical match lasting anywhere from 2-8 years.
