Objective
All program services are offered at the main location in the northern Chicago neighborhood of Uptown, but BYC services are not limited to a specific geographic area. BYC, alongside Howard Brown, serves as a magnet of care that pulls patients from over 90 zip codes throughout Chicago and beyond. Students who identify as LGBTQ+ are more likely to face harassment, bullying, and physical violence in high school, which leads to higher dropout rates. Young people experiencing homelessness or unstable housing also are at a higher risk for abandoning high school before graduation in pursuit of more immediate needs. Unfortunately, the cross-section of LGBTQ+ youth and youth experiencing homelessness is large due to lack of family and/or social support systems. Many of the students in the BYC program left high school before graduation due to these factors or some combination of these factors. For these same reasons, LGBTQ+ youth often have a harder time obtaining and maintaining employment.
