PROGRAM INFORMATION
Short Description
STIs remain a significant public health problem in Illinois. In 2017, Illinois ranked 10th in the nation for reported primary and secondary syphilis, 10th in the nation for chlamydia, and 17th for gonorrhea in the United States. During 2017, African Americans accounted for approximately 56% of all reported gonorrhea cases in Illinois. The Southern Illinois Region, which is more rural and has higher disparities and has the highest reported African American to other race STI disparity ratio, in Illinois (e.g., African American: White, African American: Hispanic), historically lacks easily accessible medical care that provides comprehensive sexual health services. The services provided by this grant opportunity are essential to help prevent further transmission of STIs and the resulting costly medical complications such as pelvic inflammatory disease, ectopic pregnancy, infertility and neonatal death and disability. The Illinois Department of Public Health shall fund East Side Health District to support STI prevention and containment activities, in the East Side Health District (ESHD) jurisdiction within St Clair County with a focus on gonorrhea prevention for a three-year period (36 months) Starting July 1st, 2019 through June 30th, 2022. This grant opportunity shall help Illinois Department of Public Health STI Section (ISS) accomplish the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s (CDC) Strengthening STI Prevention and Control for Health Departments (STI PCHD) grant objectives and activities.
