Short Description
The Illinois Department of Public Health’s Center for Minority Health Services (CMHS) is requesting applications for the Public Health Pipeline program from Illinois colleges and universities to develop a sustainable pathway to increase the representation of minority groups in the health and public health workforce. The goal is to remove barriers that impede individuals from minoritized groups in pursuing careers in health and public health and create systems that will provide support to maximize success. There is a need to increase minority representation in the public health and healthcare settings (registered nurses, physician assistants, and doctors) workforce. Applicants must provide details on how their proposed framework will address the following criteria: 1. Develop a sustainable program that establishes a pathway for socio-economically disadvantaged minority college students and develop a support system to facilitate submission of successful applications to public health, nursing, or medical school, 2. Establish a process through which identified students receive adequate resources, experience, and support to successfully continue pursuing a career in health care and/or public health; and 3. Include pre-med and nursing students' participation in basic public health and health care education that enhance skill sets and knowledge about health inequities and approaches to addressing and reducing barriers to achieving health equity. The Public Health Pipeline program requires the grantee to collaborate with local health care institutions, public health organizations, community-based organizations, or non-profits to ensure students get enriched experience in the field of health/public health. Successful applicants must demonstrate their ability to provide students with the necessary tools and support to be successful such as meaningful experience through coursework/lectures/conferences/ and hands-on or practical experience working in a diverse environment and/or with a diverse team. Diversifying a workforce will contribute to better access to healthcare and improve health equity for all minority groups.
