Objective
The Sangamon County Dam Removal project consists of the removal of two dams, the Riverside and Color Plant Dams, located on the Sangamon River in Springfield, IL. The removal of these two dams will reconnect a total of 55.1 miles of the Sangamon River upstream to the Lake Decatur Reservoir Dam in Decatur, IL. When combined with the Petersburg Dam removal project, a total of 82 miles of the Sangamon River will be reconnected. This will also mean that there are no complete stream barriers on the Sangamon River between its mouth at its confluence with the Illinois River upstream to the Decatur Dam. In addition to reconnecting the Sangamon River, these dam removals will also benefit countless miles of small streams and tributaries that feed this river.
